Forest Gump Explication The statement of, “My Mama always said life’s like a box of chocolates; you never know what you’re gonna get,” made by Forest, can be analyzed through characterization, symbolism, setting, and background music. Forest compares the chocolates to life, referencing how a person can get a variety box of chocolates, with different sizes, shapes, textures and tastes. The setting also illustrates this concept, as a feather is pictured at the start of the title sequence, blowing in the wind. The feather lands on a man walking, however, the feather is once again swept up by the wind and finally comes to rest at Forest’s feet. The spot at which the feather would land was unknown, just as the contents of the box of chocolates were unknown. Also, another example of an unknown surprise that comes to Forest is when the girl sits on the bench next to him, and other people continue to come and go during the time Forest is waiting for the bus. The background music is the scene is soothing, as a mother would comfort her newborn baby, unaware of the child’s future in life. Characterization also helps in the understanding of this sentence. Forest explains how a person’s shoes can tell their past and future adventures in life.
