The symbolism of the feather is life's twists and turns, as the feather does. You start at the top of your life timeline, like the feather starts at the top of the building in the title sequence. You gradually fall, until you die, which is when the feather hits the ground. However, when you die, there will be someone there to care for you, as forest does, giving you a proper place to eternally rest, which would be inside his book. Because of the setting, would lead one to believe the life would be one of industry in a smaller town, since the feather is floating through a crowded area before landing by a bus stop. Forrest's quote about life being a box of chocolates helps with this symbolic feather because it states that you never know what will happen, which is when the feather twists and turns. The background music is pleasant, suggesting that life is something to be loved and taken care of and showing that you should not view the eventually ending of life in a pessimistic manner.
