From the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, the operation of European society has evolved. The perspective from which they base their civilizations has changed from living in fear of God to the “rebirth” of society during the Renaissance to the experience of life through thought and philosophy during the Enlightenment. During the Middle Ages, the Church was the ultimate authority. Society was run through the fear of God. From the identical, deep voiced sounds of the Gregorian chants to the dark, religious themes of “Death and the Miser,” all elements that contributed to this time period had a similar, dark, simplistic mood that revolved around it. The first sign of “rebellion” from the church was in the undertones of Dante’s Inferno. By writing in the vernacular and disregarding the word of the Church, he became one of the first people to defy the facility in any way.
After the plague wiped out a third of Europe’s population, the continent was forced to start over. Because of this tragedy, many people began to refrain from looking to God for help, and began depending on their own personal talents to propel them through life. During the Renaissance, people became much more secular and relied on themselves and others rather than God and the Church. Though it was still a prominent power, its word was not a significant as it had been during the dark ages. The art forms that were born during this period were much more elegant and reflected much more everyday life as opposed to religious figures and scenes related to the Church. Much more color was used in paintings, more tone and rhythm was given to the music forms, and the architecture became much more intricate and creative. During this time period, many new art and building techniques were developed and art flourished. The Renaissance was the rebirth of a new society that depended less on religion and instead was based on the achievements of the population.

This time period was one driven by thought and philosophy, hence the nickname “The Age of Reason.” The society during this time period was based off of thoughts of how things worked and why they did so. Things were thought of in great depth and great discoveries and conclusions were made. During this time, all art forms reflected the free will that was a strong component of society. Music was filled with tones, instruments, and great depth. Art was made to be interpreted however the philosophers wished. And literature was written to create discussion and influence thought.
As society progressed from the Middle Ages to the Enlightenment, the way that society was run in Europe evolved.
